Find the perfect pickleball paddle for your needs with Tennisnuts as your guide. Whether you are looking for a paddle with power, spin, control, or an all-round paddle, we can guide you into choosing the best pickleball paddle for you.
Power Paddles: For the Aggressive Player: Power, Pace, and Precision
If your playing style is fast-paced and attack-driven, an elongated pickleball paddle is the ideal choice. This paddle shape provides extended reach and greater leverage, allowing you to generate explosive drives, accelerate ball speed, and conquer rallies with aggressive shot-making. Whether you favour a longer paddle face, a lengthened handle, or both, this design caters to players who thrive on assertive, high-pressure gameplay. These paddles have a harder, firmer core, providing a strong, speedy bounce.
Control Paddles: For the Control-Focused Player: Finesse, Touch, and Accuracy. These paddles have a wide-body shape.
If your strategy centres around controlled placements, drop shots, resets, and counter-play, a wider, shorter paddle with a generous sweet spot is best suited to your game. The broader surface area offers a more forgiving hitting zone, allowing for precision placement and superior touch, even on off-centre hits. Control paddles are with a softer, more flexible core for more feel and better placement of the ball. The control and feel paddles are also mostly more comfortable if you have any arm or wrist issues, as the thinner power paddles can have more vibration.
All-Round Paddles: These provide the perfect mixture of power and control. This category features the majority of paddles available in the marketplace and has a mid-weight, a standard overall length and width and a standard length of handle. The majority of all-round paddles are either a standard shape or a hybrid shape.

The most important factor is the paddle's shape. Generally speaking, most power pickleball paddles are long shape. Control pickleball paddles are generally wide-body, while all-round paddles have a standard or hybrid shape.
Increasingly, these lines are blurred; power-focused paddles now often have a hybrid or widebod shape and conversely, wide-body paddles can also provide plenty of power and punch. We have also arranged all our paddles into Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner categories.
The second most important factor is the Core Material construction. Padle construction is evolving rapidly due to the game in the USA, but we have distilled this fast pace of change into some easy to understand categories:
GEN 1 paddles - come with a hollow core or older materials like wood or aluminium.
These are gradually being produced only for beginners or people discovering pickleball for the first time. These materials are durable and offer excellent value for money.
GEN 2 paddles - These have a Polypropylene Honeycomb core, which is a really versatile material that can be used to create paddles providing varying degrees of power and control.
GEN 3 paddles - These have a hybrid core, where the polypropylene honeycomb is enhanced with foam either injected around the edges or as an added layer.
GEN 4 paddles: These paddles completely replace the honeycomb core with a full foam core. The type of foam used can have a variety of proprietary names given by the brands. Sometimes, some brands will also describe hybrid cores as Gen 4 cores, which is why we have given each GEN a distinct description.
The next important factor in choosing a pickleball paddle is the surface construction, which determines the pddle's power, control and spin potential.
The most common material used to be Fiberglass, which is now mostly used in cost effective paddles, mainly for beginners.
More recently, the majority of advanced and intermediate paddles have a surface construction of Raw Carbon Fibre, which provides a rough textured surface.
The most recent advanced paddles also have surface grit sprayed onto them, which provides the roughest texture. This texture is perfect for achieving great angles during kitchen exchanges, as well as extreme spin on serves and dip and kick on driving rallies.
Other important factors include the overall length, thickness, the paddle's weight, the handle length and thickness.
The overall length: longer paddles allow greater leverage and more power, whereas shorter paddles give more control and feel.
The thickness: A thicker paddle gives more control as the core softens with each impact of the ball. A thinner paddle allows more power by producing more pop.
The weight: Lighter paddles offer more maneuverability, while heavier paddles offer more power, but the user needs strength and timing to wield them correctly to gain that benefit.
USAP Approved Pickleball Paddles:
USAP approved means a pickleball paddle has been tested and approved by USA Pickleball, the official governing body for pickleball in the United States. This approval confirms that the paddle meets the required standards for official pickleball play, including rules around size, surface, materials and performance. For players, it is a helpful way to know whether a paddle is suitable for competitive use, while also giving extra confidence in the quality and legitimacy of the product. For beginners and recreational players, a USAP approved paddle gives peace of mind that you are buying a paddle designed to meet proper pickleball specifications, making it a reliable choice for practice, club sessions and friendly matches.
UPA-A Approved Pickleball Paddles:
UPA-A approved, often referred to as UPA-A certified, means a pickleball paddle has been reviewed and certified under the United Pickleball Association of America equipment standards. This approval is mainly linked to professional-level pickleball, including events connected with the PPA Tour and Major League Pickleball. UPA-A has its own approved paddle list and certification process, which is separate from the USA Pickleball approved paddle list.
Simple Buying Advice:
For most recreational players, focus first on choosing a paddle that suits your playing style, comfort and level. For tournament players, always check whether your event requires USAP approval, UPA-A certification, or both before purchasing or competing.
